  • Description
Antique oil painting of Place du Gouvernement, Algiers by Curt Grolig
    German, Mid-19th century
    Canvas: Height 31cm, width 43cm
    Frame: Height 45cm, width 58cm, depth 7cm

Painted by Curt Victor Clemens Grolig (1805–1863), this radiant view sets the Place du Gouvernement at a turning point in Algiers’ history. The scene aligns the Hôtel du Périgord—an emblem of French colonial modernity—against the domes of the Djamaa al-Djedid mosque, anchoring the composition in a dialogue between imported ambition and enduring Islamic tradition.

Rows of evenly planted trees organise the square with crisp, geometric order, bathed in warm Mediterranean light. Figures in garments of red, white, and blue animate the plaza, their colours echoing the French tricolour and signalling Algiers’ recasting as a kind of colonial Paris by the sea. The hotel’s hierarchical elevation recalls Parisian models, while the mosque’s presence tempers the narrative with quiet continuity.

Grolig, Munich-born and favoured by the King of Saxony, was among the earliest European painters to turn to Algiers after its conquest. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1844 to 1859 and took part in the 1855 Universal Exhibition. His work is represented in major French collections—including the Louvre (with Landing of the Duke of Orléans in Algiers), the Château de Versailles, and the museums of Reims and Troyes.

The painting also embodies the political and urban ambitions unleashed after 1848, when Algeria was declared an integral part of France. Haussmannian ideals—ordered boulevards, planted avenues, and architecture designed for clarity and control—inform the square’s measured layout and the Hôtel du Périgord’s façade.

Preserved in its original, finely carved giltwood frame and crisply signed ‘Grolig’, this work unites historical resonance with polished technique.
As a refined Orientalist cityscape, it offers collectors both aesthetic poise and a sharply observed record of Algiers’ 19th-century transformation.
