Literature: For a necklace of multi-color sapphires in a similar design, see Oscar Heyman:The Jewelers' Jeweler, p. 73.
In the period before and after World War II, jewelers began to explore the beautiful hues of varied multi-color sapphires, many of which had long been neglected in favor of the traditional blue gems in saturated tones. In some ways, jewelers were making a virtue of necessity, as the availability of traditional saturated blue sapphires and "pigeon's blood" rubies had steeply declined during the early 20th century. Making a virtue of necessity, Van Cleef & Arpels had led the way in experimenting with these neglected stones in the 1930s, creating their "passe partout" flower jewels featuring large Ceylon sapphires in vibrant yellows and pale cornflower blues. Oscar Heyman, one of a select small group of Van Cleef & Arpels manufacturers, followed suit, setting multi-color sapphires in modern forms that appealed to the American jewelry collector. -
