William Merritt Chase Retrospective, MFA, Boston
The first retrospective of impressionist artist William Merritt Chase's work in three decades was held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, from October 9th, 2016 through January 16, 2017; the last time the city hosted a retrospective of his work was in 1886. The exhibition opens in Venice in February and includes eighty examples in both oil and pastel, and spans Chase’s four-decades-long career. Arranged thematically, the works include studio interiors, portraits, still lifes, Japonisme, and plein air ocean landscapes and park vignettes, all while capturing personalities in the theater of life. The exhibition is co-organized by the MFA, Phillips Collection, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezla (Venice), and the Terra Foundation for American Art; it is the first Chase retrospective to be shown abroad.
