The New Museum of the American Revolution

Philadelphia has a new star attraction: the Museum of the American Revolution. Just three blocks from Independence Hall, the museum complements and augments the story of the country’s founding, so central to its location.

The museum does not merely portray a basic timeline. New scholarship and interpretive methods, along with visually rich displays, instead present visitors with the complexities and layering behind the formation of this nation. The storylines are examined through the lenses of social, political, economic, and cultural contexts within 16,000 square feet of gallery space. While the roles of heroes and heroines are certainly included, the common man and woman are the major playersboth those in support of and against the uprising. Also explored are the relationships and degrees of liberty extended to Native Americans and enslaved and free African Americans.

In its presentation of material, the museum intelligently and creatively asks people to consider the many factors and complexities that were involved in this pivotal historic juncture, just as there are at any point in time.

I highly recommend visiting the Museum of the American Revolution. You can “run” through or take your time to absorb the many collections, read the text panels, select objects to digitally explore, watch the videos, “witness” a battle (complete with rolling mist and shaking ground), hear the emotional story of and see General Washington’s war tentand, most importantly, learn.

The museum is located at 101 South Third Street (at Third & Chestnut), Philadelphia, PA. For more information, visit www.amrevmuseum.org.

Made in England for the American market, it celebrates Boston as a guardian of Liberty. It may date from the period of the “Coercive Acts” of 1774, part of the crown’s punishment for the 1773 Boston Tea Party, which closed the port of Boston and suspended the Massachusetts governing charter.

  • After he purchased General Washington’s tent in 1909, Reverend W. Herbert Burk set it up in the snow at Valley Forge. This photograph dates to about 1911. The tent will be on exhibit as a result of the combined efforts of textile conservators, engineers, historical tent experts, and museum staff. To protect the integrity of the tent for long-term display, a custom-made, umbrella-like aluminum frame and sub-tent support the weight of the historic textile and reduce the stress on the linen. The project to display Washington’s tent is comparable in scale to the Smithsonian Institution’s multi-year effort to conserve and exhibit the Star-Spangled Banner.
