To me, Interior Design should be about rooms that hold their style for quite a long time. Our work ranges from traditional to highly glamorous. It’s architectural, with beautiful backgrounds and serene tailored interiors that are enlivened with a rich, but muted palette. I often use antiques because they add amazing depth to a room that you can’t achieve any other way. In today’s marketplace, 18th and 19th century pieces can be less costly than new furniture and are surely good from an environmental perspective.
I have created eclectic Manhattan residences as well as family retreats in the Hamptons, Utah and Mexico to name a few locales. Current projects range from Beverly Hills to Fifth Avenue and Palm Beach.
The process often begins before designing anything, be it shopping with clients for a new home or helping them select an architect. I always start with sketches. This allows me to develop the design, which later is interpreted in CAD (computer assisted design). For me, a hand-drawn sketch adds to the visual quality and romanticism.
Shopping is about being present, noting what’s around you and adding it to your mental Rolodex. From the diverse ethnic markets of New York to the Marche aux Puce de Saint Ouen in Paris and the myriad of options in between. Be open and without predetermined expectations, you might find amazing seashells in the Hamptons or pinecones in Central Park. Just recently my team and I found a wonderful set of Windsor chairs in a dumpster, awaiting our discerning eye!
The numerous homes I have designed since starting my firm are layered with my knowledge of art, antiques, vintage treasures, textiles and color theory that is seamlessly played out in each room while creating a cohesive flow from space to space. I feel so happy that I chose a field that I’m still so passionate about, some 40 years later.
