Angelo Canevari
Italian, 1930 - 2014
Angelo Canevari (1901–1955), born in Viterbo, Italy, was a versatile artist known for his work as a painter, futurist illustrator, and mosaicist. Coming from a family of artists—his father Enrico and brother Silvio were also accomplished—Canevari began his career in graphic illustration and rose to prominence within the Aeropittura movement. He later became renowned for his large-scale mosaics, which adorn significant public buildings such as the Foro Italico, the Palazzo del Cinema Nuovo Sacher, and the Aeronautical College in Rome.
Canevari’s style combined classical themes with dynamic, geometric compositions inspired by modernist aesthetics. He was selected to participate in the 1936 Olympic Art Competitions, presenting works that explored flight and mythology. In his later years, Canevari turned to biblical and humanist subjects, executing murals, mosaics, and public artworks that merged traditional iconography with an experimental approach. His legacy lives on in Rome’s urban landscape and through a family tradition of artistic innovation.
