Description
Gilt bronze mounted porphyry revolving dial mantel clock
French, late 19th Century
Height 37cm, width 14cm, depth 14cm
This beautiful Neoclassical style mantel clock, created from porphyry mounted with silvered and gilt bronze, is formed in the shape of a vase. The movement of the clock is of the cercle tournant type, whereby the cylindrical dials rotate instead of the clock’s hands.
The clock features a porphyry vase-form case, which is mounted to the front with a gilt bronze medallion and to the sides with twin gilt bronze masks, each of which issues a foliate handle, the handles scrolling to rejoin the gilt bronze vase top. The clock dial is comprised of dual cylinders, one denoting hours and the other minutes, the numbers inscribed upon individual enamel plaques. The vase-form case is raised by a square porphyry base, which is mounted with gilt and silvered bronze foliate motifs. From the base rises a gilt bronze plinth, which in turn supports the porphyry clock case. -
