Chinese Antique Statue of a Buddhist Guardian
-
Description
A large and impressive copper alloy sculpture from China depicting 'King of the West" (廣目天王), one of the four Heavenly Kings and Guardians who watch over the four cardinal directions of the world. They are often found as a group of four at the entrance of the temple for protection and to ward off the evil spirits.
In Chinese mythology, the King of the West is 'the one who can see". He is depicted as an armored warrior with severe expression. The statue on offer was cast in great details. Standing on a cloud form base and stepping down on two devils, his arms stretching out, holding the auspicious objects in each hand, a scepter and a pearl. On the back of the statue, there is a seal indicated the year of Yongle reign of Ming dynasty (1360-1424AD) but it was likely a piece cast in Ming style from the Qing dynasty, circa 19th century.
The detail of the work is superb and the patina is very attractive. The original red lacquer was mostly rubbed off and most gilt surface remain. -
