GRAND TOUR
Italy, circa late 19th/early 20th Century
Bust of Young Gaius Octavius Augustus
Carved Carrara marble, unsigned
17 1/4" H x 8 3/4" W x 5 5/8" D
A good Grand Tour bust thought to depict Gaius Octavius Thurinus or Caesar Augustus, the adopted heir of his maternal great-uncle Julius Caesar. The original is held in the Vatican galleries and was a very popular subject during the Grand Tour for sculptors and collectors alike.
Condition Report:
Original socle. Obvious discolored vein for a repair to left shoulder. Other minor scuffs and wear as expected.
