-
Description
Large scale "Smuggler" running horse weathervane, last quarter 19th Century attributed to Harris and Co, Boston MA, the full bodied copper weathervane captured mid-stride, with legs extended and a flowing mane and tail that convey motion and vitality. retaining a pleasing gilded and verdigris surface.
Many American weathervane manufacturers modeled their horse weathervanes based on famous racehorses of the day, the images themselves often based on popular Currier and Ives prints of these equestrian athletes. Attribution to a specific maker is often difficult, but other signed examples of this weathervane in this size are known to be made by Harris & Co. -
