Lignum Vitae String Box
-
Description
Good mid 19th Century English turned Lignum Vitae wood string box of pillar form, the lid and body turned from a single block of timber, the top with string dispensing nipple which unscrews to allow refilling container, the whole with good rich color and patination.
Lignum Vitae, or “Wood of Life” a native species from the Carribbean and Northern South American coast, has long been prized for its beauty, density and its ability to be turned an polished. String boxes were a necessity in Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian households as any parcel (including the Sunday Roast) would require binding in string - before the advent of tape (plus tape isn’t very pleasant on roast meat!) -
