Description
This small rectangular box is painted white and covered with cut out engravings, which have been heightened with paint. The lid is decorated with a pastoral scene with a courtly lady and gentleman in an axially aligned garden with paired fruit trees, mythological statues, an architectural gate, and two rows of cypress trees, all leading to and framing a mountain. A strap work border surrounds the scene, as well as the lower sides of the lid. The four sides are similarly decorated with pastoral garden and hunt scenes, as well as an exotic Buddha-like monument. Retaining traces of its original sandracca varnish, the box has achieved a mellow cream color through age. The interior and the bottom of the box are painted a bright orange red.
