Ryijy (rug), Finland, 1808

Hand-tufted wool on linen warp.
Dated '1808' in the weave.
Called "ryijy" in Finland, these types of Scandinavian tapestries are low density pile weavings that were used for commemorative, ceremonial, utilitarian and decorative purposes. This example from the early 19th century is typical in its botanical pattern on a dotted ground with a geometric border. Woven into the tapestry is the date '1808' and initials 'B.I.M.D.' -
