    About
In Corbeille de fleurs (1925), Braque brought together two of the themes that would dominate his paintings throughout his career: flowers and music. Fresh and dried flowers were a household staple as Braque’s wife, Marcelle, would often collect and place them throughout the house and studio. These flowers, would then inevitably find their way into the artist’s compositions, as in the case of Corbeille de fleurs, whereas a fresh bouquet of flowers takes the prime focus as the main element in the canvas. To the right of the bouquet however, is music, taking a less prominent yet significant position in the arrangement, here presented in the form of a musical score. Music always played an integral role for Braque, and for a period of time he would have weekly lunches with the musician Erik Satie. The two men grew increasingly close, with Braque even owning one of his pianos and a portrait of the composer painted by Marcellin Desboutin. Much like flowers, music became a recurrent motif in Braque’s paintings and came to appear in various forms in over one hundred paintings throughout the artist's life.

Message from Seller:

Bernard Jacobson Gallery was founded in 1969, publishing and distributing prints and by the mid 1970s, having established himself as one of the major dealers in the international print boom, Jacobson began to show paintings and sculpture. The early 1980s saw the gallery open branches in Los Angeles and New York, expanding the range of international artists. From 1997, the gallery moved more firmly into American and international art.
