    Jean Halter (1915 - 1981)

Jean Halter was a self-taught primitive artist who lived in New Hope. She was born in Pittsburgh and raised in South Carolina. Around 1940, Halter started painting as a hobby and in 1951 she and her husband bought a home in Solebury Township and operated the River House Restaurant (now Chez Odette) in nearby New Hope. Soon she decided to decorate the restaurant with her “primitive” folk art street scenes. These charming works attracted the eyes of customers and before long her paintings began to sell. She devoted more and more time to her art, specializing in street and village scenes of New Hope, Bristol, Philadelphia, and views of the Deep South, recalling her childhood. Three of her paintings became cover illustrations for the Bucks County Traveler magazine in the 1950s. She was regarded by many as the “Grandma Moses of New Hope”. Her work has always been a well-kept secret among local collectors, although it is fast gaining recognition on the national level and is proving to be extremely sought after.
