  • Description
For your consideration here is a very nice still life floral painting done in 1920 by the American artist, Julia Henshaw Dewey. Signed lower right and dated 1920. There are 2 small miniscule repairs verso as well as 10 or 12 tiny spots of inpaint mainly on the petals of the red flowers. Overall in contemporary gold leaf frame (new) 26.5 by 30 inches.

The daughter of Judge Charles Henshaw, a prominent member of the New York State bar, Julia Henshaw attended Bryan Seminary in Batavia. She pursued art training in New York, studying privately with Charles Melville Dewey, perhaps as a student in his life class for women. Exactly when they were married is uncertain; both 1884 and 1887 have been suggested as dates in the limited biographical record available. Dewey worked primarily as a portraitist, although she also executed still lifes, landscapes, and figural subjects. She exhibited works in the Academy annuals of 1888, 1890, 1892 and 1893, and 1910, and also showed with the Society of American Artists. She was a member of the National Arts Club and a member and an early president of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, a position she held for four years. She died in 1928.
