Description
with a white marble top above a frieze drawer and reeded columns flanking a panelled fall front which opens to reveal three lines of small drawers with pigeon holes above, the lower section with two panelled doors opening to reveal shelves, all on plinth base; stamped S.JAMAR /37. GERRARD ST. SOHO
Provenance
FOOTNOTES
• The present cabinet is conceived in the French Empire style associated with the Soho cabinet-maker S.Jamar. Jamar's strong leaning towards French influences supports conjecture that he may have been trained, if not brought up on the Continent. By 1819 he was at 29 Wardour Street and advertised his works as 'equal to any made in Paris'. Documented cabinets by this maker featuring similar free-standing columns with engine-turned mounts are illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, pp.273-280, pls. 510, 511, 518, 520, 521. A related secretaire cabinet by S. Jamar sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 13 June 2002, lot 185.

Wick Antiques was established by Charles Wallrock in the early 1980s. Having grown up in the Antiques world Charles developed an extensive wealth of knowledge. Starting out as a ‘man with a van’ he quickly gained a good reputation and embarked on a longstanding relationship with Harrods. He was later joined by his wife, Caroline Wallrock. Caroline having completed a Persian degree, went on to study at Christie’s fine art and then joined Sotheby’s specializing in Islamic and Japanese works of art
