Ship of the Line Hardtack Barrel
-
Description
A large and impressive original HMS oak and ash biscuit barrel from an English ship of the line dated in rosenailing "1791". Wider at the base than at the top to lower the center of gravity on a rolling deck, and with a lid to keep vermin out. Hardtack was a flour, water and salt biscuit that was a large part of a sailor's diet when at sea. Oak staves and ash banding with tapered ends. A rare piece of naval history. Now useful as a drinks table.
