Mid-Century Dutch Chandelier with Opal Glass Shades, The Netherlands 1960s
-
Description
This beautiful pair of chandeliers is from the heyday of post-war Modernism, an era that brought Dutch design into blossom. The period saw the revival of an elementary, undecorated visual language, emphasizing sleek design as these chandeliers demonstrate.
A Dutch painter once said, “I don’t paint cows, I paint light”, and indeed, the play of light and dark has been a source of inspiration for artists and designers for centuries, and this pair is no exception. The eye-catching brass stem and wires, and the opal glass catch the light beautifully, contrasted by the black middle part from which the four arms stretch out in a symmetrical order. Each arm holds two tubular glass shades, one facing up-, the other downwards. The eight opal glass tubes have a brass ring at their base, a simple but effective design element. Thanks to the arrangement of the glass shades, light is distributed evenly in all directions when switched on.
The combination of materials and textures gives these lamps a modern, sleek design, a clear return to bright simplicity that is in opposition with the flowing, organic lines of the reconstruction of the early 20th century. Defined by long, vertical lines, these chandeliers were once housed in a Dutch courthouse, illuminating its interior.
