Mid-Century Upholstered Armchair with Curved Armrests, Europe ca 1950s

  • Description
For mid-century designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and this armchair is a perfect example of this sentiment.

The duality of two elements creates a flowing, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This armchair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic mid-century, that describes the furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was an accessible and lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic of the Bauhaus. This manifests in the back- and armrests’ curvature and form. The arms and front legs appear to be formed from the same piece of wood with a beautifully sculpted shape dictating the rhythm of the design. The large, curved back has a welcoming shape that, in combination with the fully upholstered body, creates a cosy impression. The back legs are short and much less exposed to balance the distinctive front ones, which contributes to the harmony of the look.

Charismatic furniture from the past that imagined a cool, uncluttered future has become very “now”. This is mainly because of the timeless aesthetic that easily complements almost any interior thanks to the visual and material quality of the design.
