Collinson & Walton. An Aesthetic Movement Burr Walnut & Ebonized Music Cabinet
-
Description
Depth: 14.57" || Creator: Collinson & Walton || Collinson and Walton A rare Aesthetic Movement ebonized music cabinet with pierced gallery to the top, wild burr walnut panels to the doors which open to reveal sheet music slides, with castellated brass backplates etched with fleur de lys and writhen ring handles. The lower section slightly breaks forward with compartments for music sheets or L. Ps. The sides decorated with shallow carved circular details to the sides, and incised decoration to the feet. Collinson and Walton was the first partnership company in 1869 between Francis Collinson and John Walton, before Collinson partnered with George Lock and created Collinson and Lock in 1871 while John Walton went to create a venture on his own, John Walton and Co. Successors to Herring, Son and Clarkes, Collinson and Walton were operating as cabinet makers in 1868-1869 at 109 Fleet Street. Later, in 1871, Collinson and Lock was recorded as cabinet makers at the same location.
I have attached two extracts from a newspaper, the Owl, from 1869, about The Lancaster, an ebonized music cabinet that had registered designs, and was advertised as "an elegant piece of furniture for a drawing room" and a cabinet where "musician sheets can be classified and kept free from dust". -
