A well designed superior quality Anglo-Japanese oak desk
-
Description
Depth: 36" || Creator: Edward William Godwin || A well designed superior quality Anglo-Japanese oak desk (attributed) to E. W. Godwin. The construction of this desk is pure architectural, the corners of the aprons below the work surface have subtle angled joints uniting the legs at the top, identical to the way the legs are united on Godwin's' Florence Cabinet' made by Art Furniture in 1871. The angled side supports below have bevelled edges and are mitred into the legs and also into the top rails below the drawers and side aprons. The upper legs have chamfered edges with bird beak end details and short turnings down to the feet. The castellated shield style escutcheons are reminiscent of the escutcheons on the Ionides Cabinet Godwin designed for Luke Ionides in 1871, with triangular handle drops and diamond style back plates.
Height 30",
Width 48" 1/2",
Depth 36". Circa 1870. -
