Description
An English early Victorian period solid oak double-sided library or writing table of large scale and rectangular form, the original gilt-tooled brown leather inset top above long aprons either side with banks of three drawers having original turned knobs, the boldly turned and reeded legs on original beaded brass and brown-glazed porcelain casters.

Typically unsigned, this table is attributed to famed cabinet-makers Gillows of London and Lancaster who began producing tables of this design with slight variations and in various sizes from the regency period until the 1870's. The motifs of the original gilt-tooled leather top and caster-type put this fine and rarely found larger example at circa 1850. The double-sided form of this table is commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as a "partners desk" due to its binary form, however by definition a partners desk is of double pedestal design. In addition to its original purpose, it could be chicly used as an unconventional dining table; clearance from floor to bottom edge is 23.38".
