  • Description
Federal period New Hampshire game table (1790-1819). Simple lift top game table in the classic New Hampshire form—possibly from one of the Dunlap shops. The table-top is bowed over a conforming bowed apron carved in the solid. It has with beadboard ends and blocked corners. The table has a drawer that is original to the table, but unlike most tables of this kind, the drawer opens from the righ side of the table instead of the front. This gives a cleaner look and the Dunlap's were known for customizing their designs to the customer's needs. Original knife hinges but a previous owner had small butt hinges fitted inboard of the originals without even cutting mortises into the wood. The later butt hinges were removed long ago. It looks like the table was originally painted with the "Dunlap Orange" which has faded to pink (see underside of table apron where the legs are blocked). The curent grain painted finish was likely applied during the American Fancy Period when the owner wanted a fresh look.
