1880 French Provincial Pair of Round Still Life Oil Paintings in Gilt Frames

Sold Sold
  • Description
Dated on reverse 1880, these very decorative round paintings, oil on canvas, were executed by the French noble Marie Pauline Mathilde Duplat de Monticourt Comtesse de Chaponay (1855-1888) married in 1878 to Jean Humbert Comte de Chaponay.
Initialed and also inscribed on reverse, in their original condition, these still lifes present vivid colors in a Victorian romantic setting and are historical testimony to the nobility daily life and interior decoration of the time with baskets, ceramic plant-holders and flowers from the gardens.
One of this pair bears an interesting label on the back about delivery by the framer of the paintings at the train station for the castle of Monticourt.
The molded carved wood frames are gilt with pure gold leaf.
Throughout the 19th century, the number of women painters increases considerably due also to the fact that many noble ladies dedicate their time to this Art in order to express their artistic creativity.
    Can be purchased individually.
