    American, active/lived: Connecticut and Europe
    Signed, (l.l.): G. Burr
    16 1/2” x 21”; 21 1/2” x 26” framed

Provenance: From a Connecticut Estate; Doyles, New York.
Connecticut born, Burr lived, traveled to Germany to study architecture and then stayed to study figure and landscape painting. During his time in Europe Burr traveled extensively, eventually settling to study at the Carolossi Academy in Paris. There Burr met Claude Monet who had a profound influence on Burr’s work. Burr returned to the United States after his fourteen-year education and took up study at the Art Student’s League in New York. Burr enjoyed many exhibitions of his work and success as a society painter. Burr was a member of the Allied Artists of America, the Salmagundi Club, and the Lyme Art Association and shared his time between New York City and Old Lyme, Connecticut wintering in Florida.
For a painter known to winter in warmer climates during his time in both Europe and the United States, it is of particular note that Burr chose to depict a winter scene. Burr’s bright and post-impressionist style of small interconnected dabs of paint enables him to convey a scene that is bold and cool yet soft, creating a feel reminiscent the day retreating and the season changing from late autumn to early winter in New England.
Burr was a colorist who believed in the precepts of a daring American impressionism. Many of his watercolors and oil paintings are brilliantly polychromed with faceted areas of pure color over a bare surface creating a highly saturated and avant-garde examples of this variation on the aesthetic of American impressionism.
