Description
Armorial Dish
Kangxi period circa 1716-1720
Austrian Market
Diameter: 14 inches; 35.7cm
An extremely rare and previously unrecorded Chinese armorial dish with the central underglaze blue armorial achievement of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736) with the augmentation of the arms of the House of Austria. Eugene had been brought up in the court of Louis XIV at Versailles but because of his reputed e?eminacy he was denied entry to the French military by Louis himself. He departed for Austria and became one of the most successful military commanders of modern European history. He was appointed Governor of the Southern Netherlands in 1716 (then under Austrian control) and built the Belvedere Palaces in Vienna. -
