-
Description
Yingde stone, harvested from from Guangdong province in Southern China, is one of the four famous types of Chinese scholar stone (also known as Gongshi, Suiseki in Japan, meditation stone or spirited stone in the west). Yingde stone is priced for its sculptural form that tends to be thin and slender, and its intricate surface marked with twisted furrows, folds, wrinkles and lines. The stone best embodies the traditional Chinese ink painting of mountainous landscape in far distance and invokes the imagination from the viewer.
This scholar rock on offer exemplifies such beauty of Yingde stone. It's reversed pyramid form rise to defy gravity but also maintain a perfect balance and harmony. It resembles, perhaps, a bird taking flight, an impossible karst peak in places like Zhangjiajie, a rising cloud slowly scattered into smoke, all depending on the mind of the viewer. The surface is extraordinary, weather by nature, it exhibits large wing like folding, concaved depression and much wrinkled and lined characters. The view of the stone changes at different angles and will keep unveiling its mystery to the viewer upon meditations.
The highly priced scholar rocks with their strange formation has long been revered by Chinese literati dating back to Tang/Song Dynasty. Typically formed through geologic processes, these rocks beguile connoisseurs with their dynamic form and the interplay of positive and negative space. The exodus of energy and enigma is mediated upon and interpreted by the individual viewer. These stones are more than decorative, they reflect a cultivated endeavor to contain the nature in one's study. -
