Portrait of an Oriental Man with Turban, Etching

$ 1,029
  • Description
    The French painter, sculptor and engraver, François de Hérain, stayed longtime in Morocco during the period of the French Protectorate (1912-1956). The portraits he made of Moroccans and Algerians fit in with the taste for Orientalism that was popular. This dated etching from 1921 was one of these portraits. The man’s face is very finely worked out, while his djellaba and turban are worked out somewhat schematically. This deliberately elaborated contrast provides depth and liveliness. In the early 1930’s he published three albums of etchings, entitled “Types Marocains”. The first album concerned Fez, Central and South-Eastern Morocco; the second: the Zemmours, Marrakech, South-West Morocco and the third: North Morocco, Tanger, The Riff, Ouezzan, Taza and Oujda.
