Description
A large French Empire style gilt-bronze and malachite centre table
French, 20th Century
Height: 85cm, width: 160cm, depth: 79cm
This superb table, a grand and highly impressive object, is a French Empire style table made of ormolu and malachite. This classic combination of materials is here realised with an excellent design that combines the Empire style with clear Egyptian influences. The rich and vibrant green-banded crystal of the malachite is adorned with a frieze of sphinxes around the edge, and mounted upon impressive legs which consist of lions' heads and paws, with outstretched eagle wings. Demonstrative of the potential both of this combination of materials and of the extensive possibilities of the Empire style, a more impressive, imposing, and grand centre table will be hard to find. -
