Description
The Viner Angling Shield Presentation Fishing Trophy with original Fitted Oak Wall Display Cabinet, the heart-shaped central plaque with embossed scene of a group of gentlemen fishing, a building and forest in the background. Around the sides of the plaque are a series of names of winners of the annual fishing competition ranging from the 1930s to 1980. The shield is held in its original custom made oak display cabinet with glazed door and rear wall suspension loop.
The Viner Angling Shield is not mentioned in the newspapers of the time but it seems highly likely, especially given the quality of the silver utilised here, that it relates in some way to the firm of Viners of Sheffield, one of the UK’s most famous firms of silversmiths and cutlers. One of the more distinctive of the names of the winners of the piece, that of “H. Ruddiforth”, winner in 1959, relates to a family with Yorkshire roots and adds further to this hypothesis.
A fascinating and highly unusual example of a presentation plaque, the integrated case making this quite probably a unique survivor and is of the highest quality. -
