Brno Flat-Bar Chairs in Ivory Wool & Stainless Steel, Set of 8
-
Description
It is often said that modern design is timeless, and nowhere is this more evident than in the Brno Chair, one of the most iconic pieces of 20th-century furniture design. Created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a visionary often regarded as a founding father of Mid-Century Modernism, the Brno Chair embodies the Bauhaus principles from which it was born. With his unparalleled mastery of minimalism, Mies designed a chair so refined that it remains just as relevant nearly a century later.
This set of eight Brno Flat-Bar Chairs is an outstanding example of Mies’ vision. Acquired along with an entire suite of custom-order Knoll pieces from 1983, these chairs appear to have been rarely, if ever, used. They retain their original custom textured wool upholstery in ivory, a fabric that remains timeless and provides a striking complement to the sleek frames.
The frames are crafted from polished stainless steel, prized for both its warm tone and lasting durability. By contrast, most contemporary Knoll editions are produced in standard steel with chrome plating, while solid stainless steel frames are now available only through special order.
Overall, this set remains in exceptional condition, as if preserved from the year of manufacture. At once a functional seating solution and a collector’s treasure, these chairs exemplify Mies van der Rohe’s enduring contribution to modern design. -

Stories exist in many forms, we see them in objects. The aesthetic of those before us is passed down through their surviving creations. These are the objects we search for; to preserve, refine, & continue the story. Object Refinery combines design obsession, fine craftsmanship, and a love for history in our worldwide search for objects. Based in Connecticut, USA; we partner with a network of local artisans to restore and refine our findings before passing them on to the next collector.
