Japanese Meiji Art Nouveau coffeepot, ca 1890. Ovoid bowl with cylindrical neck and hinged cover with flower finial; short and plain foot. Vertical tapering spout and high-looping handle. Clusters of applied irises with loose irregular blooms and dense overlapping tendrils in eddying water. Modish exoticism for the sophisticated Western market.
Marked “Samurai. Shokai. / Yokohama. / Silver”. Samurai Shokai was a famous emporium with English-speaking staff and an array of Asian wares. Very good condition.
