Throwing Three Balls in the Air to Get a Straight Line (Best of 36 Attempts)
-
Description
This work by John Baldessari is a collection of selected photographs, documenting the process of throwing three balls in the air while attempting to replicate identical stills. Though his intent was to create similar photographs, no two are the same in practice due to variables in his throws and potential gusts of wind.
Baldessari made 36 attempts total (the number of exposures on a standard 35mm film roll) and chose twelve shots he considered most successful as documentation of this work. This piece represents a core concept in process-based artwork, coupling a repeatable action with a documentary process resulting in an artifact evidencing time elapsed by the artist's own hand, and the discrepancies which arise as a result of human imperfection.
