Description
16th Century Enghien Dutch Wool Silk Flora Fauna Tapestry
Offered for sale is a rare and earl Dutch Enghien Workshop tapestry from the second half of the 16th century. The tapestry is woven from natural wool and silk fibers in beige, green, and yellowish tones. Originally created as a tablecloth, this exceptional piece features a central medallion encircled by fruits and vegetal crowns, surrounded by semi-human and semi-animal heads symbolizing the unity of fauna and flora. Floating ribbons add a sense of movement, while the decorative border is divided into eight angular sections adorned with floral motifs and stylized arabesques. Enghien tapestries are renowned for their craftsmanship and historical significance, originating from the southwest of Belgium.
Dutch Colonial tapestries are generally from the 16th to the 18th centuries, when the Dutch Republic flourished as a major world power and established its colonial empire. During this period, Dutch and Flemish workshops produced tapestries depicting scenes from Dutch colonial history, such as those of East India Company activities, and these pieces helped to visually represent Dutch power and influence in various parts of the world.
The tapestry has a modern conversion to a wall hanging and the back is covered for protection. We have not opened that sewn backing. The tapestry may have been restored during this conversion but there are no obvious signs of that. There are signs of minor restoration stitching, but we do not know the timeframe. The piece is in very good condition, especially considering the age.
