1871 Gien Antique French Asian Japanese Style Flower Decor Centerpiece Plate

$ 1,395
  • Description
    Antique French Majolica Handled Tray  Dish – Gien, Signed & Dated 1871
    Exceptional antique French Majolica plate by the renowned Faïencerie de Gien, signed and dated 1871. This finely molded piece features a softly scalloped rim with integrated twisted handles, finished in a luminous turquoise ground. The interior is richly decorated with a hand-painted Japonisme-inspired scene: flowering branches with pink blossoms and foliage, accented by a delicately rendered bird in flight. The painterly detail, harmonious palette, and subtle relief modeling are characteristic of Gien’s high-quality Majolica production during the late 19th century. This particular decor corresponds to the search for a cleaner, diverse aesthetic that blends traditional simplicity and function with modern avant-garde, focusing on polished looks, clean lines, and a harmony of all elements. The reverse bears the Gien mark for “1871,” confirming its early period manufacture and collectible authenticity, with signature "terre de fer" by Gien. Raised on 3 graceful feet.
    Condition:
    Good antique condition consistent with age. Very light surface wear may be present, typical of 19th-century Majolica, with no major cracks or restorations observed. A rare and highly decorative example of early Gien Majolica—ideal for collectors of French faience, Japonisme ceramics, or 19th-century decorative arts. Equally striking displayed in a cabinet or as a centerpiece.
    History:
    The factory was founded in 1821 by the English Thomas Hall and became one of the most important names in the World Exhibitions in Paris, since 1855, winning each time one of the first three prizes for its innovative and daring spirit, until the 1900 World Exhibition, when Gien was nominated jury member and not allowed to compete: its stand was one of the most impressive with its display of monumental objects d’art: amongst vases 6 feet tall, a spectacular 12 feet candelabra clock decorated with 4 cupids made by the famous sculptor Mathurin Moreau.
    The factory still produces today, using the same traditional techniques and maintaining superb quality. Its museum offers the best pieces of its historical production for visitors to see.
