    An Ashanti doll with fine patina from the first half of the twentieth century. The Ashanti Akuba is probably the most famous of traditional African sculptures. not only representing fertility but also good luck.
    Figures like this one were carried by girls and women to promote their fertility and to ensure the beauty and health of their offspring. The round, flat disc heads, columnar body with outstretched arms and smooth, black surface convey Ashanti or Asante ideal of beauty.
