Auguste Edouart

French, 1789 - 1861
Auguste Edouart (1789-1861) was a French artist who is best known for his intricate silhouette portraits, which he created during his time in England in the 19th century. Edouart was a skilled draftsman who began his career as an apprentice to a coach painter in France, but later turned his attention to portraiture.

Edouart's silhouette portraits were highly detailed and often included intricate patterns and designs, such as lace collars, jewelry, and other accessories. He was known for his ability to capture the likeness and personality of his subjects, and his portraits were highly sought after by members of the upper classes.

Edouart traveled extensively throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland during his career, and he created thousands of silhouette portraits of politicians, aristocrats, and other prominent figures. His work was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was appointed the official silhouettist to Queen Victoria in 1840.

Today, Edouart's silhouette portraits are highly prized by collectors and are considered important examples of the art of silhouette portraiture. Many of his portraits can be found in museum collections around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
