Herbert Gentry

American, 1919 - 2003
Herbert Gentry (1919-2003), born in Pittsburgh, PA, was a painter renowned for his gesturally abstract works that bore the imprint of his remarkable international career. His artistic journey began amidst the vibrancy of the Harlem Renaissance and unfolded across the post-war Parisian art scene, leading him to influential jazz capitals in Scandinavia and the iconic Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan, where he resided during intervals between European sojourns.

Gentry's artistic style defies easy classification within established categories. During his time in Paris, he received tutelage from Georges Braque and delved into modernist concepts of Cubism, Expressionism, and non-western art. His exposure to the CoBrA group introduced him to the notions of automatism and the artist as an inherently social being. In a 1991 statement, Gentry remarked, "Art is mysterious. It’s about me, it’s about you, it’s about my family, my forefathers, my mother’s. It’s not only me who’s painting; it’s the people who lived before me, connected with me."

Herbert Gentry's art reflects a dynamic fusion of diverse influences, shaped by his encounters with major art movements and the pulse of social interconnectedness. Explore the enigmatic and evocative creations of a painter whose journey transcends boundaries and resonates with the essence of shared human experiences.
