Taylor & Taylor’s Top InCollect Picks: Classic Florida Design
During their 30-plus years in the design world, William and Phyllis Taylor, the husband-and-wife team behind the Miami Beach-based firm Taylor & Taylor, have cultivated a lush, tropical aesthetic that has become their signature style. William, a fifth-generation Floridian, creates architecture that forges strong connections between nature and the built environment, while Phyllis, a native New Yorker, designs interiors that complement and respond to the coastal climate and vibrant landscape.
The couple believes that Florida is not only a state but a state of mind. Inspired by the land’s indigenous elements, such as light, pattern, and texture, the Taylors’ interpretation of Classic Florida Design is defined by a casual approach to living and an aesthetic that is at once refined and exuberant. In the preface of their book, Classic Florida Style: The Houses of Taylor & Taylor, Phyllis writes, “We know Florida and are intimately aware of its subtleties, which others can miss. And from subtlety comes sophistication. For us, Florida also means the whole experience of living indoors as well as out, so we purposefully blur the boundaries between the two...to us, that is the Florida experience that everyone should have.”
Avid readers and explorers of architectural and design history, the Taylors strive to instill a sense of the past and a sense of place in their designs. They consider their most successful projects those that strike a balance between historic elements, contemporary design, and one-of-a-kind decorative objects. From nautical cottages to palatial oceanfront villas, the Taylors create unique spaces that seamlessly blend native Florida materials with singular antiques.
William and Phyllis shopped InCollect, selecting objects that, to them, represent Classic Florida Design. From a whimsical ceramic fish platter by Pablo Picasso to a bamboo clothes tree that lends a bit of old Florida flair, these hand-picked pieces reflect the Taylors’ highly personal style.
