American, 1928 - 1982
Alice Baber, a renowned painter and printmaker born on August 22, 1928, in Charleston, Illinois, led a captivating life marked by travels between Illinois and Florida due to health challenges in her childhood. She began her academic journey at Lindenwood College for Women and later at Indiana University Bloomington, earning her Master of Arts degree in 1951.
 
In the early 1950s, Baber moved to New York, joining the March Gallery and holding her debut solo exhibition in 1958. Alongside her artistic pursuits, she worked as the art editor of McCall’s magazine. Her travels took her to Paris in 1958 and across Europe in the 1960s. In 1964, she married painter Paul Jenkins.
 
Baber curated various exhibitions, including the 1972 "Color Forum" at the University of Texas and the 1975 "Color, Light, and Image" at the Women’s Interart Center in New York. Her international presence expanded to Japan, India, Iran, and a U.S. State Department-sponsored tour across Latin America.
 
Sharing her expertise, she taught at the University of New Mexico’s Tamarind Institute and various institutions in New York City and California. Her work is featured in prestigious institutions such as the Georgia Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
 
In her memory, the Alice Baber Memorial Art Library in East Hampton, New York, and the Baber Midwest Modern Art Collection at the Greater Lafayette Museum in Indiana pay tribute to her enduring legacy. Alice Baber passed away in New York on October 2, 1982, leaving behind a significant impact on the art world. Explore her profound influence and lasting contributions to the realm of art.
