Ben Lucas
Australian
Ben Lucas has always been drawn to the sea. Growing up on the storm-swept coast of the North Devon/Cornish border, surfing became a defining passion that has shaped his life and artistic journey. This deep connection to the ocean has led him on a path of discovery and exploration across the world’s waters, fueling his desire to express the awe, wonder, and joy that the ocean inspires.
Working primarily from memory, Ben draws upon his observations of the sea’s ever-changing moods and the interplay of light on its surface. His creative process distills these elements to their essence, aiming to capture fleeting, transcendent moments of beauty and the emotions they evoke.
When painting, Ben utilizes a flat surface, allowing for large, sweeping movements and strong downward pressure to manipulate the paint. He employs a variety of flexible tools, transitioning to brushes as the work progresses. In his view, a successful painting strikes a harmonious balance between dramatic energy and a serene, ethereal presence, evoking a sense of space, time, and distance. This interplay of contrasts captivates him, resulting in emotionally evocative artworks that invite viewers to embark on their own interpretations and discoveries.
