Fitz Hugh (Henry) Lane
American, 1804 - 1865
Fitz Hugh Lane, born in 1804, fist studied lithography with Pendleton in Boston. His marine paintings reflected crystalline atmospheric effects of his "Luminist" character. In 1835, Lane produced a panoramic painting of Gloucester, MA which brought him a fair amount of success. He worked at several lithography firms and became partners with John WA Scott from 1845-57. His concentration was on ship portraits with marine landscapes. Lane was a meticulous draftsman and used various tools such as photography and perspective devices to plan for his final product. His last two city views in lithography, of Gloucester and Castine from Hospital Island, are considered his finest. Lane was very popular at his time and died in 1865.
