François-Nicolas Martinet
French, 1760 - 1800
François-Nicolas Martinet (c. 1760-1800) was a French painter and naturalist known for his ornithological illustrations. He began his career as a painter of porcelain, but later turned his attention to the study and illustration of birds. He produced a number of works on the subject, including "Histoire des oiseaux peints dans tous leurs aspects," which contained over 600 plates of birds in their natural habitats. Martinet's illustrations were highly accurate and detailed, and his work had a significant impact on the study of birds in France during the late 18th century. His legacy continues to influence the field of ornithology and natural history illustration to this day.
