Francks Deceus

Haitian, 1966
Francks F. Deceus (born 1966 in Cap‑Haïtien, Haiti) is a Brooklyn-based painter whose powerful visual language blends Haitian cultural roots with contemporary urban experience. After moving to New York at age nine and earning a sociology degree from Long Island University, he developed his artistic voice through printmaking training and a residency in France. Deceus’s semi-abstract paintings feature simplified human figures, emblematic motifs like fire hydrants and water, and layered textures that reference Haitian art traditions and African American modernism. His work—on view in solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum and MOCADA—examines themes of identity, immigration, resilience, and race. A recipient of the Samella Lewis Painting Award, Deceus continues to exhibit widely in galleries, major art fairs, and public collections.
