George Washington Jack

American, 1855 - 1931
George Washington Jack (1855–1931) was a leading figure in British Arts and Crafts furniture design. Born in the U.S. and raised in the UK, Jack trained as an architect and eventually became the chief furniture designer for Morris & Co., succeeding Philip Webb in 1890.

Jack's designs blended traditional craftsmanship with architectural precision. His notable works include carved mahogany chairs, elegant sideboards, and decorative tables—all hallmarked by clean structure and natural motifs. His style represented a refined evolution of the Morris & Co. aesthetic, adding formal detail and sculptural quality.

Beyond design, Jack was also a skilled woodcarver, teacher, and writer. He published a well-known book on woodcarving and taught at prominent British art schools, helping shape the next generation of craftspeople.

His work lives on in museum collections, galleries, and homes that value heritage British design. Jack’s legacy continues to influence classic and contemporary interiors, making him one of the most respected names in Arts & Crafts furniture history.
