Goxwa Borg
Maltese, 1961
Artist Bio: Ġoxwa
Ġoxwa is a celebrated artist whose creative journey began in her native Malta at a young age. After honing her skills at the Saint Martin School of Art in London, she relocated to Boston, where she pursued film studies at Emerson College. Since her debut solo exhibition in 1993, Ġoxwa has cultivated a robust international exhibition career, showcasing her work in vibrant art hubs such as Paris, New York, Strasbourg, and San Francisco. Currently based in Paris, her exhibitions continue to attract a diverse audience of admirers, collectors, and critical acclaim.
Defying traditional art historical categorization, Ġoxwa draws from a rich tapestry of influences, allowing her work to transcend any single style. Utilizing a palette knife, she expertly combines oil paint and beeswax on canvas, paying homage to ancient mural techniques. Her approach mirrors the demands of buon fresco, requiring exceptional skill and foresight to navigate the rapid drying of her medium, creating a controlled urgency in her execution.
Her discerning eye for color results in a tonal palette, subtly highlighted with vibrant jewel tones, merging elegant contours with spontaneous brushwork on the tactile surfaces of her pieces. The profound emotional resonance of her imagery reflects the layers of her lived experiences, offering oblique references to classical antiquity that weave historical threads into a contemporary narrative. This synthesis creates a kind of positive ahistoricism, echoing her Mediterranean upbringing steeped in memory and multiplicity.
Much like the Minoan muralists of ancient Crete, who captured their reality with vivid depictions of dolphins, priestesses, and toreadors, Ġoxwa engages with the essence of her twenty-first-century world. In an era seeking authenticity and emotional depth amid pervasive irony, her work resonates with a sincerity that invites viewers to explore a timeless realm of visual splendor. Throughout her artistic exploration, Ġoxwa’s ability to evoke genuine intrigue captivates the imagination, transporting audiences to a richly layered experience of beauty and meaning.
