Leon Kossoff

British, 1926 - 2019
Leon Kossoff (1926-2019) was a British painter known for his expressive and textured depictions of the urban landscape of London. Born in London, Kossoff studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art.
Kossoff's work is characterized by his thickly layered and impastoed surfaces, which he achieved through a process of building up layers of oil paint over time. He often painted the same locations repeatedly, capturing the changes and nuances of light and atmosphere throughout the day and across different seasons.
In addition to his cityscapes, Kossoff also painted portraits and figurative works, and was particularly interested in the human face and form. His art is often associated with the School of London, a group of artists who emerged in the 1960s and were known for their figurative and expressive approach to painting.
Kossoff's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, and he is recognized as one of the most important British artists of his generation. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including being appointed a Companion of Honour by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012.
