Mark Knoerzer
American, 1978
Mark Knoerzer, an esteemed artist, is renowned for his captivating abstract paintings, mesmerizing light installations, and intricately crafted hand-painted wooden sculptures. Through the adept use of color and meticulous layering techniques, Knoerzer crafts geometric images and emergent symbols, establishing a distinct visual language. While his creations often exude formality and symmetry, they are imbued with a profound dedication to beauty and the sheer delight of perception.
Knoerzer garnered acclaim for his 2019 solo exhibition, Half-Life, which was thoughtfully reviewed by Cate McQuaid in The Boston Globe. His artistic prowess has also been featured in an array of documentaries, ranging from the compelling Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie, showcased at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013 and released by Magnolia Pictures, to Elevated Thinking: The High Line in New York City, narrated by Susan Sarandon and aired on PBS in 2014.
Born in 1978, Knoerzer embarked on his artistic journey, earning an Associates of Fine Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology and a BFA from the esteemed Parsons School of Design, where he was honored with an Undergraduate Dean's Scholarship and a BFA Scholarship. His quest for artistic mastery led him to delve into the realm of theater backdrop painting at the Studio and Forum of Scenic Arts in Cornwall, NY.
Currently residing in the picturesque Hudson Valley, Knoerzer draws inspiration from the serene tranquility of his surroundings, infusing his latest creations with a palpable essence of natural beauty and contemplation.
