Maxwell Philip Co., Inc.
American
Maxwell Philip Co., Inc. was a respected New York City-based manufacturer and distributor of barware, kitchen goods, copper bowls, and high-end serving equipment for hotels and restaurants. Founded by Maxwell Lehrhaupt, Philip Betten (who was notably exacting about the correct spelling of Philip), and Irving Gerber, the company operated out of 225 Fifth Avenue from the 1930s through 1970. Its products were known for their quality craftsmanship and often stamped “MP” or labeled “Sterno/Maxwell-Philip Division, Colgate-Palmolive Co., NY.”
In 1970, the company was acquired by Colgate-Palmolive through its Sterno Division, drawn by Maxwell Philip’s strong reputation for producing premium serviceware for the hospitality industry.
Today, vintage Maxwell Philip pieces—especially mid-century bar carts, brass barware, and copper kitchenware—remain highly collectible and admired for their enduring style and American quality.
